PCS Money and Allowances

A PCS is not one payment. It is a handful of separate allowances, each covering a different stretch of the move, and the money people lose is almost always in the seams between them — the nights after you check out of your old house but before you check into the next one, the weeks your family is in one place and you are in another, the receipts nobody told you to keep.

Two things follow from that, and they shape everything on this page. First, every one of these allowances is a reimbursement against documentation, not a lump sum for having moved — which is why the paperwork posts here matter as much as the pay posts. Second, the rules are joint: BAH, TLE and the rest come from the DoD travel regulations, not from anything Navy-specific. What your Army or Air Force neighbour tells you about their move is usually right, and applies to yours.

Start here: the allowance that covers the gap

The single most-asked question in this cluster is what covers you while you are between houses, and whether it still counts when you book something that is not a hotel.

Read them in that order. The first tells you what you are entitled to; the second is the one you will need when you are actually booking something.

Housing, and what it is worth where you are going

BAH is the allowance people plan their lives around and understand the least, mostly because the answer genuinely changes with the ZIP code and with who else is in the house.

A personally procured move pays you a share of what the government would have spent to move you. Whether that is worth doing is a real calculation, not a foregone conclusion, and it turns hard on how much you own.

An overseas PCS adds a screening process for your dependents that can stop the whole move, and it runs on a timeline most people meet only by starting early.
